The SfNIRS Fellows Awards were introduced at fNIRS 2024 to recognize outstanding trainees in the fNIRS community. The awards honor students and postdoctoral researchers who have made substantial contributions to fNIRS research. Multiple fellows will be recognized across both categories at fNIRS 2026.

Eligibility and terms
Student Fellow Award
Eligibility requirements include:
- Working toward an advanced degree, for example PhD, MSc, MD.
- Evidence of fNIRS themed research, demonstrated by CV, conference list, and publication list.
- Member of the Society for fNIRS.
- Submitted one or more abstracts to fNIRS 2026 as a lead author.
- Expected to participate in the Society for fNIRS conference in the year of nomination.
- Unsuccessful candidates may be re nominated in a subsequent year, provided eligibility criteria are met in that year.
Postdoctoral Fellow Award
Same criteria as the Student Fellow Award, with the additional requirement:
- The candidate must have completed an advanced degree, for example PhD, rather than currently working toward the degree.
Nomination requirements
Candidates must be nominated, self nominations are not permitted. The nominator must be a member of the Society for fNIRS.
A complete nomination package must include:
- A nomination letter.
- A two page curriculum vitae summarizing the candidate’s accomplishments.
- A list of the candidate’s publications.
- An additional letter of support.
- A copy of the candidate’s submitted abstract or abstracts.
Important, incomplete nomination packages will not be considered.
